Group tasting

Group coffee tasting, everyone on their own phone

Run a blind cupping with friends, staff or a class. You host; they join with a six-character code. Nobody sees anyone else’s notes until you open the Wall, and nobody knows what the coffees are until you reveal them.

How it works

The host creates a session in the Groups tab, adds up to 12 coffees with their details hidden, and shares an invite code. Up to 20 people, including the host, join free and record each coffee on their own phone. The host watches progress live, then opens the Characteristic Wall one coffee at a time to show everyone’s notes together, and reveals what each coffee was.

What the host and tasters need

Hosting

  • A free Coffee Tasting account: Sign in with Apple or an email code
  • An active Premium subscription
  • Up to 12 coffees and 20 people per session, including you
  • A session already running keeps working if Premium lapses

Joining

  • Free, always. No subscription
  • No account needed: you can join as a guest
  • A display name of 1 to 24 characters, and accepting the community terms
  • An internet connection; entries made while briefly offline sync when you reconnect

Running a session, step by step

  1. Step 1

    Create the session

In the Groups tab, choose Host a group tasting and give the session a title. Hosting needs a free Coffee Tasting account (Sign in with Apple or an email code) and Premium.

  2. Step 2

Add the coffees and the answer key

Add up to 12 coffees. For each one you can enter its details (origin, species, a buy link) and the descriptors you expect, using the same pickers as a tasting. Tasters only see the coffee names, so call them Sample A, Sample B for a fully blind tasting.

  3. Step 3

    Share the invite code

Share the six-character code or the invite link through the share sheet. Codes use letters and numbers that are hard to confuse; 0, O, 1, I and L are never used.

  4. Step 4

Start the tasting and watch progress

Start the tasting when people have joined. A live grid shows, for each taster and coffee, whether they have finished, started or not begun.

  5. Step 5

    Open the Characteristic Wall

Open the Wall to show what the group tasted, one coffee at a time. Opening it locks everyone's entries; you can reopen tasting if someone needs more time. Only the host moves to the next or previous coffee, and everyone's screen follows.

  6. Step 6

    Reveal and end

Reveal each coffee's answer key, or reveal them all. Notes that match the key are highlighted, including partial matches where someone picked a broader term. End the session when you're done; everyone keeps the Wall and the key in their history.

The Characteristic Wall

The Wall is where a group tasting comes together. For the coffee on screen, each field shows the group’s picks with category totals first: if someone picked Clementine, it also counts toward Citrus and Fruit, so you can see agreement at every level. Expand a category to see the specific notes, tap a note to see who chose it, and read the words people typed in their own words.

Scored fields show the average and the range. After the reveal, notes that match the host’s key are highlighted, with partial matches marked when a taster chose a broader term than the key.

Joining with a code

Open the Groups tab, choose Join with code and type the six characters, or tap the invite link your host sent. Invite links look like coffeetasting.app/join/ABC234 and open the app directly when it’s installed.

You see the coffees by name only, record each one on the same cupping sheet as a solo tasting, and your entries save as you go. When the host opens the Wall, entries lock; if your phone was offline, your unsent notes stay on the device and are clearly marked as not counted until the host reopens tasting.

Privacy and safety

  • Everyone in a session sees its title, the coffee names and display names. Notes become visible when the host opens the Wall for that coffee.
  • The answer key is never sent to tasters before the reveal.
  • Shared text is filtered for objectionable content. You can report or block anyone from the session, and reports are reviewed within 24 hours.
  • Sessions idle for 72 hours close automatically.

Read the privacy policy and terms for the details, or the guide to hosting a coffee cupping.
